My Korean Icon Contest
Three things come to mind when I hear the word "Korea": drama, music and food. The icon I chose is somehow related to music.
Hallyu wave has already spread throughout the world through K-pop, with names like Super Junior, Big Bang, Wonder Girls, Girls Generation and of course, the Korean Tourism Organization's newest endorser, Psy. I think every person knows the song, "Gangnam Style" so I decided to pay tribute to the inspiration behind the song, which is now one of the famous tourist spots in Korea and that is Gangnam or "Gangnam District".
Gangnam (강남 in Hangul) literally means "South of the Han River". It is the third largest district in Seoul, and is considered the fastest rising business district in Korea. It is also the national capital for education, which is one of the factors that make Gangnam an attractive destination.
What if you are not into shopping or business or fashion or music (I don't think there's anyone who isn't interested in any of these)? There are a lot of places to go to. You can visit the COEX Mall and Aquarium, Kimchi Field Museum (which is inside COEX), Kukkiwon (World Takewondo Headquarters), and Bongeun Temple and surely there's something that will catch your attention.
No wonder Psy got his inspiration from Gangnam district. It is because this place has a lot to offer and it's high time for everyone to know about it. He's so inspired that he chose to film "Gentleman" MV in the area again. In case you didn't know, "Gangnam Style" was shot primarily in COEX while "Gentleman" was filmed in Cheongdam-dong, one of the neighborhoods in the district.
Definitely Gangnam-gu is included in my go-to places given a chance to go to Korea. I look forward to visiting the Kimchi Museum and the coffee shops, and also window shopping. I hope it can be anytime soon :)

For me when I hear Gangnam aside from
business, I also think of fashion. For me when I hear Gangnam aside from business, I also think of fashion. There is this sense of wanting to break the monotony of being too formal that's why I am guessing that the district is considered as a place to be in fashion. Several
popular shops are located here, particularly
in Cheongdam-dong. This area is known for
housing international brands, like MCM, Cartier and Vera Wang to name a few. I took note of this district too because this is where the entertainment companies (people behind producing KPop), like SM, JYP, Cube etc. are located.
